What Do Our Pupils Think? At the conference, pupils from years 2 to 10 were asked, "What does good teaching look like?" Interestingly the answers were all focused on the characteristics and actions of a good teacher. Evidently we are not about to be replaced by a machine in the minds of our young learners. The replies in bold are those that seemed to be mentioned most often. So a good teacher… • Talks slowly, explains clearly • Repeats and revises • Talks to you if you have a problem/Helps you when you are stuck • Is fair, doesn’t have favourites • Is not judgemental • Fun, enthusiastic and happy. • Interesting lessons, lots of practical activities, working in groups • Doesn’t shout • Is kind and understanding • Tells you often how you are getting on/Gives useful feedback • Listens to you/respects you • Shows you how to learn • Can control the class • Doesn’t lecture • Uses ICT, whiteboards, a range of resources • Doesn’t go off on tangents/Gets to the point • Knows what they are talking about • Makes lessons different • Is not moody • Laughs and smiles |
