Using drama to stimulate writing for able pupils
"How can we get our pupils to become more confident with their writing?"

This was a question asked by headteachers from across our primary, middle and upper schools.

Our pupils are confident at speaking, but become hesitant at writing. "What could we do to help them become more confident and proficient with their writing?"

An answer was to use drama as a medium to stimulate the pupils' imagination and vocabulary.

Using the skills of a talented drama teacher, Val Eddington, two workshops were run, based on 'The Tempest'.

The first workshop was for primary and younger middle school pupils, with the second for older middle school and upper school pupils.

The dramatic techniques, characterisation and scenes were able to engage and stimulate the imagination of the pupils so that those pupils were then more confident to explore and develop their writing skills.

The workshops were observed by teachers from across the Network and we look forward to the ideas which were raised in those workshops being developed more comprehensively in all of our schools...for the benefit of all of our pupils.
